❄️ 2025 the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation ❄️
It was about time!
At the initiative of Tajikistan, United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Glaciers, and 📅March 21st as the International Glacier day.
It's wonderful to know there will be a strong focus on our incredible natural wonders, and even more exciting that the year is dedicated to 'Preservation'—a call to ACTION!
This international year is co-facilitated by UNESCO and World Meteorological Organization, coordinated by an Advisory Board I am lucky to be a part of 🙏 , and four Task Forces representing 75 international organizations and 35 countries 🌍

So, why should we even care about glaciers? Here are some cold hard facts:
💧 Nearly 2 billion people live in areas where glaciers and seasonal snow melt supply their water.
🌊 Over the past century, nearly half of all sea level rise can be attributed to the loss of mountain glacier ice.
⏳ Glaciers are incredible climate archives poke Ice Memory Foundation
🥗 Glacier melt delivers nutrients to lakes, rivers and oceans, driving phytoplankton blooms.
🚜 In high mountain areas and downstream, snow and glacier meltwater can be used for drinking water, agriculture, electricity production.
📸 Glaciers are important assets for tourism.
⚡ When they melt rapidly, glaciers can pose hazards to people living downstream causing landslides, catastrophic floods.
🌍 Glaciers carry deep cultural importance for numerous local and indigenous populations around the world
The problem?

The good news?
💫 It is not too late to preserve our mountain glaciers.
This year I’ll be sharing weekly updates on the latest glacier science, spotlighting key events, expeditions, inspiring individuals, success stories in glacier preservation, and practical actions we can all take to make a difference.
